As we say farewell to warmer weather, and welcome in the drearier winter months. Many of us accept that we will have to wave goodbye to our skin’s summer glow. Thankfully, just because the weather makes us pack away our swimsuits in favor of heavy winter clothing we don’t need to lose our sun-kissed summer glow, as well. To help us bring the summer no matter the season, we have compiled the following helpful guide of 8 tips for how to keep the summer glow all year long:
.
.
Keep applying sunblock.
Unfortunately, even during the gloomiest days of the year the sunlight is still powerful enough to cause skin damage. Even during overcast winter days, 80 percent of the sun’s rays filter through the cloud cover, bringing with them dangerous UVA rays that can cause sunburns, skin cancer, and speed up aging. We also need to remember that snow reflects and intensifies light from the sun which can lead to nasty sunburns. To keep our skin glowing all year long it is important that we protect it with a broad spectrum sunblock with a 30 SPF or higher every day, even during the autumn, spring, and winter.
.
Eat for your skin.
We know the importance of healthy eating and our skin is a reflection of the foods we consume. To keep the summer glow all year long, we need to be conscious of what we put into our bodies. This makes it paramount that we adequately stay hydrated and eat foods that can influence the moisture of our skin. Look for foods rich in essential fatty acids for maximum impact on our skin’s health. Here is a small sampler of skin friendly fare: avocados, flaxseed, olive oil, and salmon.
.
.
Moisturize and moisturize some more.
We have all heard about the importance of moisturizing our skin, especially after long days at the beach or during the brutal winter months. This will keep our skin glowing, healthy, and supple all year long and even reduce the signs of aging. Skincare experts tell us to apply creams, lotions, ointments, and high-quality moisturizers to trap in our skin’s moisture. After all, it is easier to hold in moisture than replenish lost oils and hydration. That is why it is recommended to limit hot baths or showers and immediately follow up bathing with the application of moisturizing products. For the best results, choose a product that is composed of one or more of the following ingredients: aloe vera, jojoba oil, glycerin, petroleum, mineral oil, and shea butter.
.
Exfoliate.
Flaky skin can ruin the appearance of our skin and be embarrassing. Thankfully, we don’t have to suffer or hide away all winter long. Purchase a favorite exfoliating product or make a scrub from simple ingredients around the house. A good recipe to try: 3 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel, 1 cup sugar, ½ cup extra virgin olive oil, and a few drops of lavender essential oil. After exfoliating, remember to apply a moisturizer to keep skin glowing.
.
.
Don’t get razor burned.
We all know razor burn is irritatingly painful, but the red bumps, rashes, and ingrown hairs can quickly derail our chances for glowing skin no matter what time of year it is. Avoid razor burns by shaving with the grain, use shaving creams or gels, frequently change blades, and moisturize shaved areas. By following these simple proactive measures, we can stay comfortable and keep our skin healthy all year long.
We believe glowing skin comes from the inside, out. Nurture your skin from within with a holistic diet, pamper your skin with Coola Suncare products or radiate with happiness from one of our many surf & yoga retreats.
