For a beginning surfer, the opportunities seem endless for how to begin your surfing experience. We get excited about what style board to get, where to go, and which waves to start with. But we may be getting ahead of ourselves. Sometimes, the best way to get started is simply to gather information from those with experience. As Maya Angelou once said, “when we know better, we do better.”
Tips from veteran surfers suggest beginners learn to surf on a Longboard. Longboards are more stable and easier to pop up on. It’s important to learn where the “sweet spot” is on your board, that perfect spot on which your body needs to lie for optimum performance. Be sure to keep the nose of your board level and parallel to the water. Be aware of where in the wave you need to be. Falling behind the wave will make it tough to drop in, while too in front of it may lead to the wave breaking right on top of you.
Always remember to be safe and have fun. Keep positive throughout the learning process, and you will have a better beginning as you find your surfing bliss.
