Clean teeth and healthy gums are what make a healthy dental and oral system. Many people today do not place too much importance on their dental and oral health, thinking that they do not play significant roles in overall health and wellness.
This is actually far from the truth because your oral and dental health has essential links to your holistic health. They even affect the quality of your lifestyle.
This is why paying attention to your teeth and gums is necessary.
Why Having Your Teeth Cleaned and Gums Checked Are Essential
For a more detailed explanation of why having your teeth cleaned and gums checked is a need, here are the apparent benefits of doing these things:
• Reduces the risk of cancer and dementia
This may come as a shock to many individuals but maintaining and improving your oral and dental health can reduce the risks of certain cancers, and even dementia.
Data from studies and research reportedly suggest that individuals with a history of gum disease are 14 percent more likely to develop cancer. Apart from oral cancer, the risks also include breast, lung, skin, gallbladder, and esophageal cancers.
Experts also asserted that people with healthy gums are over 70 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This is in comparison to those who have had gum diseases in their lifetime.
• Prevents gum diseases
Gum diseases are silent conditions. They do not usually inflict pain or any of the like, allowing individuals to notice the problem as early as possible.
In most cases, the condition will only become noticeable when the problem has already worsened. This is why prevention is very much the best cure for this matter.
Accordingly, having your gums checked and teeth cleaned regularly allows dentists to determine whether the health of your teeth and gums is still at an optimal level. These dental treatments and check-ups also allow dental experts to identify whether problems and issues are already rising.
• Prevents from tooth decay
Tooth decay is a common dental issue among individuals. The decay takes place when hygiene is not observed well and properly.
In short, it is due to the existence of bacteria. This starts with the foods consumed being left in place inside the mouth.
Keep in mind that cleaning plays a significant role in hygiene. So, having clean teeth and healthy gums prevents decay from occurring and even from starting.
• Maintaining our appearance
Your teeth and gums impact your overall appearance. If you have unhealthy or diseased teeth and gums, this can dramatically affect the way you look.
Severe cases of dental and oral conditions even change your appearance, especially facial features. These changes are not usually pleasant at all.
So, maintaining and even improving your appearance is one of the benefits of having clean teeth and healthy gums. It is worth noting that there is a reason why several dental treatments and procedures are mainly done for the purpose of improving one’s appearance.
• Boosts your self-esteem and confidence
In relation to the point given above, your oral and dental health affects your appearance. This is why they also have lasting effects on your self-esteem and confidence.
When you have untidy teeth and unhealthy gums, there is the tendency of avoiding smiling before your audience or anyone in front of you. You will certainly feel conscious of your teeth and gums.
As a result, this decreases your confidence level, as well as the feeling of looking great.
• May lower risk of heart disease
Teeth problems and gum diseases may impact the health of your cardiovascular system. This means that the risks of obtaining or developing heart conditions are significant.
This is because the bacteria that cause the oral and dental conditions may enter the bloodstream. When this happens, the blood may thicken due to the production of protein due to the presence of the bacteria. Accordingly, clots may form, increasing the risks of a heart attack.
Another heart issue that may arise due to poor oral and dental health include stroke due to the inflammation of the blood vessels.
How Often Should You Do It
Having excellent oral and dental health means you are practicing proper hygiene. This also means that you are not neglecting your dental check-ups and visits, including treatments like teeth cleaning.
In terms of proper oral and dental hygiene, you have to do this every day. You have to brush and floss your teeth twice or thrice a day, especially after a meal and before sleeping.
Changing your toothbrush is also part of proper oral and dental hygiene. Ensure to replace them once every two or three months.
As for dental visits and check-ups, make sure that you do this regularly. Once a month is ideal, and once every three months is only fitting. Whatever you choose to do, though, ensure to consult with your dentist and follow their advice.

I like that you pointed out how maintaining and improving your oral and dental health could reduce the risks of certain cancers, and even dementia. I was surprised to see some tartar between my teeth when I looked into a mirror earlier and it is making me a bit insecure. I should probably visit a dentist later this week and ask for a dental cleaning.
